OPERATING PRECAUTIONS
Operators - Only properly trained persons should operate grinding wheels to ensure safe usage of the machines.
Floors - Surrounding floors should be maintained in good condition. Splash guards should be used where appropriate.
Mounting - Only trained persons should mount abrasive wheels.
Speed - Under no circumstances should the abrasive wheels exceed the maximum operation speed (see above for details).
Guarding - For safe operation of the machine, ensure that the wheel guard is in a secure position. The guard should be properly adjusted and secure before the wheel is run.
Side Grinding - Extreme caution should be taken when grinding on the sides of straight-sided wheels used for off-hand grinding. This can be dangerous if the wheels are seriously worn or when abrupt pressure is applied.
Lubrication - Spindles should be well lubricated to guard against overheating.
New wheels - For the effective use of a new wheel, the wheel should be run for a minute. Nearby people should stand well clear during the trial run to avoid the possibility of malfunction.
Stopping wheels - Applying pressure to the face or periphery is not recommended and is dangerous to bring the wheel to rest.
Wet Grinding - The wheel may become unbalanced at the commence of grinding if stationary wheels are immersed in coolant for an extended period of time. Before a wheel is stopped the coolant should be turned off and the wheel run free until dry.
Centreless Grinding - Careful inspection prior to grinding of the components in the tray is necessary, as an oversize piece may damage the wheel or may be projected back.
Cutting-off and depressed-centre wheels - Only the recommended wheel by the manufacturer should be used. Inspection for possible warping and defects should be conducted of the cutting-off wheel before mounting. Cutting-off wheels should be mounted only on machines designed and recommended for their use.
Cylinder wheels - Before wire or tape-bound wheels are removed they should be worn down to the first tape or group of wires. In removal of the wires or tape, great care should be taken not to damage the wheel.
Mounted wheels and points - For safe and effective operation the overhang should not exceed the appropriate speed (see above for details), size of point and diameter of the mandrel.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
Legislation - In accordance with the Personal Protective Equipment Regulations 1992 and other regulations, e.g. Noise at work Regulations 1989 and Control of Substance Hazardous to Health Regulations 1999, appropriate personal protective equipment must be worn at all times while the machine is in motion. Operators of abrasive wheels are vulnerable and at risk to:
Injury to the eyes
Inhalation of dust
Physical injury
Vibration and Noise
Eye protection - Operators of dry grinding should wear appropriate eye protection, which conform to the relevant BS EN standard for example BS EN 166 Personal eye protection. Specifications;BS EN 167 Personal eye protection. Optical test methods;and BS EN 168 Personal eye protection. Non-optical test methods.
Dust protection - Face masks should be worn to guard against inhalation of dust, which comply with BS EN 149 Specifications for filtering half masks to protect against particles.
Loose clothing - Loose clothing should not be worn as they can be easily drawn in between the wheel and the wok piece.
Supervision - Management should make frequent checks to ensure the operation is adhering to the saftey precautions outlined.
